Boys Junior Varsity Tennis, Boys Varsity Tennis · Coaches Corner

On today’s Coaches Corner, I would like to introduce you to our Boys Tennis Team Head Coach, Coach Jason Leggett.

“Hello students, parents, and staff of Shadow Hills High School. I would like to introduce myself as the new head coach of our Boys Tennis Team. My name is Jason B. Leggett and I’m privileged and honored to have received this opportunity to coach our boys tennis team to a successful season, this year and in the years to come. Not only will I be dedicated to all of you in trying to achieve excellence on the tennis court, but I will give you the same dedication in encouraging high achievement in the classroom as well. Building good character, a sense of professionalism, high self-esteem, strong leadership skills, and a sense of comradery and trust  with one another will be my number one priority as a coach, on and off the tennis court. I’ve been a residence of the Coachella Valley since 1978 and have been playing competitive tennis since 1982. While in my teens (14 – 18), I’ve held a southern California USTA ranking. I played varsity tennis (singles) for all four years while attending PDHS and I have had years of experience teaching junior tennis at Monterey Country Club, as well as Big Bear Tennis Ranch. I’m currently employed by DSUSD as a middle school Individuals and Societies/Design and AVID teacher at JGMS. I have an Associates of Arts degree in History from College of the Desert, a Bachelors of Arts degree in Social Science from San Diego State University, a Single Subject Teaching Credential in Social Science from California State University San Bernardino, and a Masters of Arts degree in Education from Brandman/Chapman University. My goal as a coach is to give my players a sense of self worth, a place on our team in which they feel they belong and are needed, a place where they feel comfortable enough to strive to do their best and give it their best effort. That is all I ask of my players. Together, as a team, I believe we will achieve this goal of having a successful tennis season, as long as we support one another through the ups and downs during the tennis seasons. My goals and strategies as a coach for us to maintain a successful tennis team is to learn the proper procedures and rules of the game; learn how to keep our bodies well conditioned for high levels of competition; acquire the ability to demonstrate proper footwork, grip, and swinging of the racket for a variety of different tennis strokes; the art of setting up points to hit more winners, rather than more unforced errors; and most importantly, sportsmanship on and off the court. If we can achieve these goals as a team, I believe, and I hope you believe with me, that we can be a successful team together. Success spreads with the attainment of new knowledge, support from friends and family, and the power of positive thinking.”
